后缀-able是从法词引进的拉丁语后缀，其意思相当于that can be ～ed（能被...的）或able to be ～ed（可被...的）。由-able构成的原生形容词为数不多，所以，-able主要是充当现代英语中的活性派生后缀，可以加在许多及物动词后。
-able的异体-ible是原生词缀，它只能加在拉丁词根或词干上。有时这些词根要经过适当的变形才能与-ible结合。

先介绍几个带-able的形容词，注意动词词尾有可能变化。

1.adjustable
adj.可调节的
ex)The lamp on my desk is adjustable.我书桌上的台灯是可以调节的。

2.exchangeable
adj.可交换的；可兑换的
ex)U.S dollar is one of the exchangeable currencies in the orld money market. 美元是国际金融市场上可兑换货币之一。

3.classifiable
adj.可分类的
ex)Not all the books are classifiable by subjects. 并非所有的书籍都能按照科目来分类。

4.movable [mov = move 移动；-able]
adj.可移动的；活动的
ex)My son wants some toy soldiers with movable arms and legs.我儿子要一些手脚会活动的玩具兵。

下面介绍几个带原生后缀-ible的形容词。

1.audible [aud = to hear 听；-ible →]
adj.听得见的
ex)She spoke in a low voice,but her quiet remarks were still audible.她说得很小声，不过那轻声细语还算听得见的。

2.credible [cred = to trust 信任；-ible →]
adj.可信的；值得信任的
ex)That boy's excuse for being absent was hardly credible. 那男孩说的旷课理由是很难令人相信的。

3.permissible
adj. 可允许的
ex)Smoking is permissible only in this cabin. 只有这个车厢允许抽烟。

4.perceptible
adj.察觉得以的；看得出的；可领悟的
ex)The other ship is barely perceptible in the fog. 在雾中，几乎看不见另一条船。
