词根scrib来源于拉丁动词scribere(=to write)的不定式词干,在英语中，前者多出现在动词中，scribere的过去分词为scriptus，script是拉丁动词scribere(=to write)的动名词词干，用来构成相应的名词和形容词它们都意为to write 。追本溯源的话，scrib 来源原始印欧语根*sker- ,表示“切，砍”，和science 同源，scrib 最早的书写就是在石头或木头上刻东西。
词根 -script- 也可以理解为是根据辅音的交替规律由-scrib- 变来的，属于单 / 双辅音交替规律，如：describe 描写、manuscript 抄本 / 用手写的；同义词根有来源于希腊语的graph,gram。
