来源于拉丁语quattuor，意为“four”,若quadru-在元音字母前，字母u常常脱落掉,就成quadr,以后我们会看到很多quadri等其它前缀都是一个意思：“四”。有异形同义词根：quadr-,quart-,tetart- 四，前两者分别来源于拉丁语quardrus/quartus，后者来源于希腊语，如：quadruped 四条腿的、quartet 四重唱（奏）；它们在表示“四”时还有细微区别：quadr- 四倍、quart-,tetart- 第四。
