Providence College (Providence or PC) is a Roman Catholic university located in Rhode Island. With roots dating back to 1917, it was founded as an all-male school and was established as a centre of advanced learning for the Catholic youth of Rhode Island.

The college encompasses four schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Professional Studies and School of Continuing Education. 

The college offers predominantly liberal art programmes, which some of the most popular subjects being: accounting, computer science, dance, global studies, marketing and political science. 

On campus, there is the Phillips Memorial Library, which was constructed in 1969 and consists of 3,500,000 volumes while being a member of the HELIN library consortium of Rhode Island.

There are plenty of media opportunities for students to get involved with including the student-run radio station – WDOM – as well the on-campus television station, PCTV. There is also a student-run campus newspaper called The Cowl.

There are more than 100 clubs and organisations based on campus for students to participate in, as well as annual events such as the Battle of the Brains – an annual question and answer game-show-style tournament

Athletic teams at Providence – nicknamed the Friars – compete in the NCAA's Division I and is a founding member of the Big East Conference and Hockey East. Sports on offer include basketball, soccer, cross-country, indoor/outdoor track, tennis and volleyball.

Notable alumni include Chris Dodd, an American lobbyist, lawyer, and Democratic Party politician who served as a United States Senator for a thirty-year period from 1981–2011, John O'Hurley, an American actor, voice actor, author and television personality, and Lenny Wilkens, an American retired basketball player and coach in the National Basketball Association.
