Loyola Marymount University is a private Los Angeles-based institution with a liberal arts focus. A Catholic university founded in 1911 from the embers of Saint Vincent’s College for boys, it stems from the merger of Loyola University and Marymount College in 1973. The university follows a Jesuit educational philosophy which dates back to the 16th century.

LMU has more than 100 different programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level, four colleges and three schools. Its 142-acre campus, which has won assorted sustainability awards, is located in the west of town, near the Pacific Ocean and just north of LAX, one of the busiest airports in the world.

The university’s many student media products include the award-winning Los Angeles Loyolan newspaper, founded in the 1920s, and KXLU, an FM radio station since 1957.

Los Angeles is the second most populous city in the US, well-known for its beaches, hotels, sport and the first Disneyland. Among other things, it is also renowned for its world-famous film industry.

LMU’s School of Film and Television has produced a number of famous alumni. Actor Mila Kunis, best-known for her roles in Black Swan, Max Payne and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, attended LMA, as did Emmy award-winning director Jack Haley Jr. Other alumni include Mark Volman, a singer-songwriter and co-founder of The Turtles.
