Clarkson University is a technology and research oriented institution based in the town of Potsdam, NY. There are also affiliate campuses in Beacon NY and the state’s Capital Region. Founded in 1896, the university is named for American philanthropist Thomas Clarkson.

At Clarkson there are more than fifty avenues of study for students, in the sectors of Engineering, Business, Arts, Sciences, Education and Health. There is also groundbreaking research being undertaken at the five distinct scientific research centres at Clarkson, made possible through a $30 million grant to the university, the largest in its history. In 2016 Centre for Advanced Materials Processing presented its work at an international symposium in Lake Placid, NY.

Since 2011, The Beacon Institute of Rivers and Estuaries has been a part of Clarkson University. At Beacon students can undertake scientific research into ensuring clean watersheds and waterways, and mitigating the human and natural impacts on rivers. Beacon is also closely affiliated with the Institute for a Sustainable Environment, based at Potsdam campus.

A dedication to fitness and athletic competition are an important part of life at Clarkson. Varsity teams are known as the Golden Knights, and over 80% of students participate in at least one intramural sports team. Ice hockey is particularly prominent at Clarkson, with matches played at the 3,000 seater Cheel Arena and many alumni going on to play in the NHL.

TV journalist Kaitlin Monte, German politician Katherina Reiche, and hockey player Todd Marchant are all alumni of Clarkson. Albert Bouchard and Buck Dharma, founders of rock band Blue Öyster Cult, dropped out of Clarkson to pursue music full time.
