Wesleyan University is a private liberal arts and sciences institution in Middletown, Connecticut, 100 miles north west of New York City.

Established as an all-male institution by a group of Methodists in 1831, the university is named after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, a strong influence on the curriculum at Wesleyan, which has retained a liberal arts flavour throughout its history. Natural sciences, languages and literature were taught at the university from an early stage. It has been coeducational since 1970.

Wesleyan’s campus comprises more than 310 acres and 300 buildings, including Samuel Wadsworth Russell House, a historic 19th century mansion, a six-storey science building, a 50-metre swimming pool and an ice rink.

Psychology, political science & government, economics and biology are the subjects taken most commonly. Postgraduate courses include mathematics, natural sciences, ethnomusicology and nursing.

Its alumni include author Daniel Handler, who published A Series of Unfortunate Events under pen name Lemony Snicket, Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, actor Bradley Whitford, an Emmy-winner for his performances as Josh Lyman in The West Wing and Magnus Herschfeld in Transparent, and both members of pop group MGMT, who met during their time at the university.
